Our story

The founding members of Teachers Credit Union wanted to give teachers and their families better financial options, and we still do this today!

We are truly one of those success stories born out of a dream and supported by the tenacity and vision of our founding members. These people worked tirelessly for 3 years to get approval to launch the Credit Union, meeting in the tennis shed on Joe Stone’s property as well as the Gold Horse-Shoe café in Sydney, where the formation meeting was held.

They were all volunteers and did all of the processing and work for the Credit Union. As teachers they used their lunch hours for banking and cheque drawing and then mailed these after school hours. Members saw this as same day service and thus began our strong service ethic.

Chalkboard, our newsletter to this day, was introduced in 1969. It was produced on a duplicator and had a “smudged” look. Col Thomson, a foundation Director, claimed “It was exactly the same as most communications from the Department, hence its success!”

Over the years we have grown dramatically from our first year when we had 29 members and $644 in deposits, to now having over 155,000 members. Our history is rich with stories of our staff working above and beyond to service the needs of our members. We are a leader in the Credit Union industry and have at times been the first financial institution to trial new ideas.

Our faith in doing the right thing, providing better options for our members and providing the best service possible is still our motto. We are proud of our humble beginnings and still operate with the legacies left by the founding members.
