Our corporate responsibility initiatives recognised

29 May 2009

Teachers Credit Union has achieved recognition in the 2008 Corporate Responsibility Index (CRI), featured today in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

Organisations elect to voluntarily participate in the CRI and have to demonstrate that they manage, measure and report the various impacts that they have on society and the environment and in the marketplace. As one of the smallest companies taking part, our corporate responsibility performance has been benchmarked against other participating organisations, and we have achieved a Silver rating in some categories.

As Dr Simon Longstaff, the executive director of the St James Ethics Centre who administers the Index in Australia, noted, “the companies that have completed the CRI demonstrate a commitment to leadership. Rather than taking the easy option of not asking, of not knowing – they have prepared to engage in a rigorous process of self-examination”.

As a credit union, social responsibility is one of our core values, being part of how we operate since we began over 40 years ago. The CRI has provided us with a framework to determine areas of improvement and ensure we keep working towards best practice.

Amongst our corporate social responsibility initiatives and achievements are our Future Teacher Scholarships, Teachers Environment Fund and being recognised as an Employer of Choice.
