Arbor Grove squirms its way to a sustainable future!
Arbor Grove Primary School in Ellenbrook, WA was one of the first 10 schools across Australia (and one of two in WA) to be awarded a grant from the Teachers Environment Fund. The school is built in a new area where water-efficiency has been a key objective. The school aims to build on that community awareness and environmentally responsible approach.
With their grant five worm farms were set up and are operated by the children from the five early childhood classes (aged 3 to 5). The children use the scraps from their daily ‘fruit time’ as well as other waste from the classrooms to feed the worm farms. The compost generated is used to fertilise a veggie patch, and embed the concepts of recycling and composting as part of the children’s first schooling experience.
