Anti-virus

Although installing reputable anti-virus software and keeping it updated should protect you against most known viruses and worms, you need to be cautious about not opening emails, email attachments or files on your system of unknown origin.

Even if you know the sender, it is a good idea to always scan files for viruses before opening them.

Many anti-virus applications allow manual scanning of files and provide this ability when you right-click on the file in your file system (Windows Explorer or My Computer on Microsoft PCs).

Some of the leading commercial names in anti-virus software you may want to consider in your research are listed on our Security software page.

If you choose to install free security applications available on the internet, we recommend you seek guidance from an IT professional to ensure you are choosing reputable applications. A popular free anti-virus application is Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Only install software that is received from a trusted source and is published by a trusted software vendor.
